A Dive into Bali: The Shocking Reality of Plastic Pollution
Bali has long been a dream destination for travellers, offering pristine beaches, lush jungles, and vibrant culture. However, beneath its breathtaking facade lies a sobering reality: plastic pollution is choking this paradise.
During my current trip to Bali, I had the privilege of exploring the island and engaging with its natural beauty, but I also encountered an alarming abundance of plastic waste. This experience served as a humbling reminder of the devastating consequences of unchecked consumer habits and inadequate waste management systems and how far our mission is to completion.
The Plastic Problem in Bali
Bali’s tourism industry draws millions annually, yet the island lacks the waste management infrastructure to handle the influx of garbage. The result? Plastic is everywhere...on beaches, in rivers, and unsurprisingly the ocean.
While scuba diving 30 meters beneath the surface, I was shocked to see 'end of life' plastic that directly impacts marine life. I have never witnessed anything like it. From plastic bags entangling coral reefs to food packaging drifting alongside schools of fish, the pollution was shocking.
Unfortunately, this isn’t just a Bali issue. Indonesia’s overall waste crisis seems to be exacerbated by a lack of education among locals about the environmental and health impacts of plastic pollution. Many don’t realise how plastic disrupts ecosystems, endangers wildlife, and leaches toxins into the water and food supply. A recent Andrew Huberman podcast suggests humans ingest approximately 1 tsp of micro plastics, and without conservation efforts, expects this to increase.
Conservation Efforts: A Glimmer of Hope
Bali isn’t without its heroes. Organizations like Bali Conservation Diving, Gili Eco Trust, and Coral Triangle Center are actively working to address the crisis. Nearby islands like Lombok and the Gili Islands have also initiated community-based projects to combat plastic pollution. Yet, these efforts are ironically drops in the ocean compared to the scale of the problem.
Our partners, 7 Clean Seas, operate in Bali and extend their clean-up efforts to areas like Bantam and Bintan. Their work is vital but highlights an uncomfortable truth: no matter how many clean-ups we organise, the root cause of overproduction and consumption of plastic must be addressed.
