A Lesson from our Journey to Bolivia
Travel teaches us unforgettable lessons, and Bolivia left a lasting impression on us. Despite all of it's natural beauty, incredible mountains, deserts, jungles and rivers; the country is in a plastic crisis. Picture this: winding through the mountains on public transport, far from the beaches and rivers that often dominate conversations about pollution. Even here, in this landlocked country, we saw dumping sites filled with plastic waste, waiting to re-enter the ecosystem as harmful microplastics. On top of this...multiple burn sites of plastic and toxic waste litter the cities, where locals blame lack of waste management systems as a result of their own methods.
The lack of understanding around the devastating impact of plastic was evident. Little to no awareness of the long term effect environmental of plastic toxins circling our ecosystem, the destruction to animal habitats and potential health risks for future generations. Studies point towards the presence of micro plastics in human placenta...meaning our babies are exposed to micro/nano plastics before existing.
