Because it doesn't contain SLS, or any other strong foaming agent. Foam in toothpaste isn't a byproduct of the cleaning process, it's a deliberate ingredient added on purpose, purely for texture and sensation. Mainstream toothpaste is formulated with a surfactant, almost always sodium lauryl sulfate, whose entire job is to lower the surface tension of water so it whips up into bubbles when you agitate it with a brush. It's the exact same chemical family used in shampoo, dish soap, and some industrial degreasers to make them lather.
Nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste tablets, ours included, are built around a completely different mechanism. The active ingredient is a mineral, not a detergent. What is SLS, and why is it in toothpaste in the first place?
Sodium lauryl sulfate is a synthetic surfactant, meaning a molecule with a water-loving end and an oil-loving end that lets it lift grease and dirt away from a surface and disperse it in water. That property makes it genuinely useful in things like shampoo and washing-up liquid. In toothpaste, manufacturers add it for two reasons: it creates the foam consumers expect, and it does provide a small amount of surface-level cleaning by helping to disperse food particles and loosen surface debris.
The problem isn't that SLS does nothing. It's that the foam it creates has become a proxy for "clean" in most people's minds, well beyond what the ingredient is actually contributing. According to a technical breakdown from KRÜSS Scientific, foam volume in toothpaste is a formulation choice tied to surfactant concentration, not a measure of cleaning performance. You can build a toothpaste with a lot of foam and mediocre cleaning, or very little foam and excellent cleaning, because they're governed by different parts of the formula. Is SLS-free toothpaste actually gentler on your mouth?
For a meaningful number of people, yes, and there's real research behind this rather than just marketing language. A systematic review published in the Journal of Oral Pathology & Medicine looked specifically at SLS and recurrent aphthous stomatitis, the clinical name for canker sores, and found evidence that SLS can act as an irritant to the soft tissue lining the mouth in people prone to them. Yes. A small amount of natural foaming can happen from brushing and saliva mixing together, but there's no added surfactant creating bubbles on purpose. Complete absence of foam, or just a very slight one, is the expected result, not a sign the product is faulty.
Can I add a foaming agent myself if I miss the lather?
